Old-school dinner is trending again and we’re not mad about it. TikTok’s got everyone obsessed with nostalgic comfort food, and this Crockpot Swiss Steak is pure cozy vibes. Juicy beef steaks slow cooked in a rich tomato gravy with veggies? Yes please. It’s super easy, low effort, and tastes like a hug in a bowl.
Serves: 4
Total Time: 6 hrs 35 mins (20 min prep, 6 hr 15 min cook)
You’ll Need:
- 1 1/2 lbs round steak, cube steak, or minute steak (cut into chunks)
- Salt & pepper
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp olive oil (plus more if needed)
- 2 carrots, sliced into chunks
- 1 rib celery, sliced
- 1/2 yellow onion, sliced thick
- 2 cloves garlic, sliced
- 1/2 cup white wine (or just use more broth if no wine)
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (or crushed if you want smooth sauce)
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (make sure it’s halal/kosher if needed)
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- Optional: 1 tbsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water (for thicker sauce)
How To Make It:
- Veggie base: Toss carrots, celery, onion, and garlic into your Crockpot.
- Tenderize steak: If it’s not cube steak, give it a few good whacks with a meat tenderizer. Season with salt & pepper, then coat in flour.
- Quick sear: Heat olive oil in a pan. Brown steaks for 2 min per side. Doesn’t have to cook through, just get some color.
- Flavor bomb: Pour wine into that pan and scrape all the tasty bits. Dump it in the slow cooker.
- Saucy time: Add broth, tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire, and thyme to the slow cooker. Stir it all up.
- Let it chill (kinda): Cook on LOW for 6–8 hrs or HIGH for 4–5 hrs. It’s done when the steak is fall-apart tender.
- Thick or nah: Want the gravy thicker? Mix cornstarch + water, simmer a bit, and stir it in at the end.
- Serve it up: Pile it over mashed potatoes, noodles, rice whatever your carb-loving heart wants.
Real Talk Tips:
- No wine? Sub in broth + a splash of apple cider vinegar.
- Extra saucy? Add another can of tomatoes.
- Add-ins: Mushrooms, green beans, or frozen peas? All welcome.
- Leftovers: Store in the fridge up to 4 days. Reheat in a pan or microwave.
- Freezer hack: Freeze in bags up to 4 weeks. Just defrost and reheat.
