If you’re craving a cozy steak dinner but don’t want to spend all day cooking, this recipe is for you. It’s super simple. Just toss everything into the slow cooker in the morning and let it cook while you go about your day. By dinner time, your house will smell amazing and dinner will be ready.
The steak turns out really tender, the potatoes soak up all that good flavor, and there’s even a built-in gravy. No need for side dishes unless you want to add something extra. It’s a full meal in one pot.
Serves: 4
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 7 to 8 hours on low or 3 to 4 hours on high
What You Need
- 2 pounds of steak (top sirloin, round, cube steak, or whatever you’ve got)
- 1 packet of brown gravy mix
- 1 packet of onion soup mix
- 1 pound baby potatoes (cut them in half if they’re big)
- 1 cup beef broth or water
- 2 tablespoons butter
- A little non-stick spray for your CrockPot
How to Make It
- Spray the CrockPot so nothing sticks.
- Put the steak in first, right at the bottom.
- Add the potatoes on top or around the steak.
- Pour in the broth to keep everything juicy.
- Sprinkle the gravy mix and onion soup mix on top.
- Add the butter. Just cut it into little pieces and spread it over everything.
- Cover and cook
- On low for 7 to 8 hours
- On high for 3 to 4 hours
- Stir it up a bit before serving and you’re good to go.
A Few Quick Tips
- Cooking on low makes the steak extra tender
- Want thicker gravy? Mix a little cornstarch with cold water and stir it in at the end
- Add extra flavor with a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a clove of garlic
- Throw in extra veggies if you have them like carrots, onions, or bell peppers
Slow Cooker I Use
Hamilton Beach Portable 6 Quart Set Forget Digital Programmable Slow Cooker with Lid Lock, Temperature Probe, Dishwasher Safe Crock & Lid, Black Stainles
What Goes Well with It
- A simple salad
- Crusty bread or rolls
- Roasted veggies
- Or just eat it as is. It’s filling and full of flavor
Leftovers
Put any extras in the fridge for up to 4 days. Just reheat on the stove when you’re ready. I don’t suggest freezing it. Steak can get tough and potatoes go mushy.
Questions You Might Have
Do I need to cook the steak first?
Nope. Put it in raw. It cooks just fine in the CrockPot.
Can I use other cuts of beef?
Yes. Use what you have like sirloin, round, cube steak, or even stew meat.
Can it overcook?
If you leave it in too long on high, yes. But on low for 7 hours, it’s perfect.
That’s it. A cozy and easy dinner that pretty much makes itself. Let me know if you try it. I’d love to hear how it turned out for you.
